New Developments in Home Wind Power

Wind generator technology has been available for decades and has been steadily improving. It has only been used for residential production of energy in the past decade or so and has seen vast improvements in both design and efficiency during that time. Since they generate more power than ever while being smaller and quieter, modern wind generators can be a very good source of alternative energy for many homeowners. There are now even DIY guides to teach homeowners how to build a wind turbine..

Size and the requirement of a consistent, very strong wind were the larges problems with early types of wind generators. Early versions of windgenerators needed very strong and consistent wind to get them spinning. Even though they generated reasonable amounts of electricity when they were spinning, they were not good fits for many people due to their size and height requirements. Because of the residential areas in which these wind generators were being used, they needed to be mounted quite high up in the air. In order to generate maximum energy This meant that the homeowner had to install a heavy duty tower to mount the wind turbine and this was expensive and usually generated complaints from neighbors. Many HOA rules or town ordinances also prohibit or restrict towers or wind turbines. These older, larger units were better suited for locations that had larger lots with areas that were open and not impacted by tall trees and building.

People with homes on smaller lots, or in areas with buildings or trees have been helped by these recent wind turbine designs. More modern designs are smaller than the older models and need less of a wind to spin. They are also made of innovative materials and are much lighter than earlier models. This means that they don’t need to be mounted as high as the older wind generators and can still produce a good amount of electricity from a smaller wind. Another improvement in these more modern wind turbines is their blade design which allows them to be more efficient with the wind they receive and quieter as well. These more modern wind turbines are also much quieter and more efficient thanks to their blade design. People who live in smaller neighborhoods can generate green power without disturbing their neighbors with these more recent wind generators.

Another advantage to these more recent wind turbines is that because they are lighter, they can orient themselves more quickly and actually generate power sooner than their larger counterparts. The blades of the wind generator have to rotate to point into the wind for the turbine to operate. Generally, this is done with a rudder on the tail. Before the bigger wind generators could even produce power, they needed a strong wind to orient them properly so they could begin spinning. In a light wind, they might not even spin up and never generate power. The newer, less heavy wind turbines can start spinning and thus producing power more quickly because of the lower requirement for wind to orient them. The result is that the older and heavier wind turbines might have been able to produce more power when they were spinning, but they were spinning less often. Because of this, these newer smaller wind generators can produce almost as much electricity over the course of a year as these larger versions since they are spinning more consistently. Many of the more recent wind generators can be mounted directly to a roof and significantly reduce installation costs because of their much smaller size. A homemade wind turbine can be just what any homeowner who wants to produce free, green energy is looking for.
